About Liz

Vocal coach, Liz Johnson, specializes in jazz singing and the psychology of voice.  From beginners to professionals, singers and "non-singers" alike, Liz enjoys working with students from all walks of life who want to explore their unique voice.  She teaches Jazz Voice at the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University, and along with coaching privately, performs and records in the Nashville area.  She earned a B.S. in Psychology from the University of Illinois, and is working toward a Master’s degree in commercial vocal performance.
Liz believes in working toward healthy vocalization, regardless of the style of singing.  She draws from her training in psychology and music to help students uncover the underlying belief structures and fears that may block the experience of vocal freedom and confidence.  She works with the voice as a gateway to healthy self expression, and utilizes jazz-style songs as a way to help students find their unique sound. Since commercial singing is highly conversational, the ease and fluidity necessary for singing jazz often introduces people to their natural, “commercial” sound.
Liz also believes that a healthy voice stems from a healthy person - emotionally, physically and spiritually.  No matter what style of commercial singing a student enjoys, Liz feels equally honored and grateful for the opportunity to work with those on the journey of discovering their unique and precious voices.
